Rain Rain Go Away

This year we have had more rain  than in the 7 years we have lived here. When we arrived it is in a time of drought and there has only ever been a small amount of water in the dam.  At one stage it was bone dry.

We have had 14inches so far for December, and everything is sodden.  The air inside is damp, so I can see a lot of mould and mildew coming as soon as the rain stops and the air becomes hot and steamy.  But by then it wont be my problem.

During the deluge yesterday the drains could not keep up with the torrential rain and round the house was a lake. The drains just could not cope

After the rain stopped the drain was still running down to the dam

this was the paddock next door after the worst of the deluge the water was running like rivers down the hill to their dam.

 When the rain stopped we went for a walk, and found the  dam now  looked like this.  It was full! 
Even the overflow channel to the dam had water backed up almost to the driveway.

Himself has been saying for years he would never see the dam full in his lifetime... but it has come to pass.

Have heard from friends that the entrance to town is flooded too and the road is cut.  There is water everywhere. Dont think we will be getting our landline fixed any time soon.  It has been out since Christmas day, and they say the problem is in the exchange. Telstra are diverting incoming calls to the mobile, with the calls  costing  the same as to a landline.....so they say.

So enough is enough go away rain, although I think that might be wishful thinking for a couple more days.

Meanwhile back to the tv and the old black and white movies!! (my sewing is all packed and ready to go)

Rainy night

This is what the rain was like early in the night and it was like this almost all night. I need to get all the spare pillows dry...the tanks are overflowing....the garden has had a big drink...Go away!!

Although I must admit is was nice to go to sleep with the rain on the roof.

Now It is Raining

Its raining but the plants love it. There is a certain glow in the colour of the green grass

I like the shine on the leaves when they are wet with rain.

This is my crows nest fern and the broms they are loving the rain

Now I'm off to do some more sewing and watch some TV prgrammes I have recorded..maybe have a nana nap.

Frosty morn again

Sorry about so many posts on one day but there is so much to tell. : )

This morning we woke to another cold one. The paddock next door was all white at the bottom and you can see mist rising off the water in their dam in this picture.




Last night DH left the car parked up the back ready to be washed this morning and there was even frost on the windscreen and back window. We don't normally get frosts up this high but this was one of the rare exceptions. He went into town early to collect the Sunday paper and was told it was -1 in the town......shiver shiver.

Another Miserable Day

Woke to a thick fog, this was it at 8.30 and even the side fence is obliterated. Although in the past, we have had fog that enveloped the house right up to these plants.

So! After a quick tidy up, and necessary chores, the only thing left was to play on the computer and sew.

Cold Miserable Day and Firewood.

Yesterday was one of those dull miserable cold days that make you just want to sit inside and sew. It was even too cold to sit on the patio at lunchtime to have our soup lunch.


Afterwards we went to collect our kindling for the fire. We use this mistletoe which is brilliant. It burns really hot so the embers are able to ignite the other wood.

The mistletoe comes from this big old Leopard Ash tree that you can see behind the smaller gum trees.

We have been told it has to be about 100 years old. Unfortunately
the mistletoe birds have dropped seed and now it has invaded the tree rather badly. As it dries off though or in strong winds it does tend to drop to the ground. When we moved here the whole area under the tree was covered with lantana and vine as well as cobblers peg weeds and it has taken a fair bit to clear it out. At least now DH can just mow under it be they weeds or whatever.

Frosty morn

This was taken from near the lemon tree we cut down so we had a nice view while we were working.

Then this morning the temperature dropped and we noticed down the hill there had been a frost. Thankfully we are higher up, which has its disadvantages when it comes to walking and mowing, but at least the garden is safe from frost. It was under 5deg this morning. I am waiting for it to warm up so we can go into town to shop...because it will be cold in there even at mid day.

More rain

I know there are people out there who need rain, but we have really had enough. There won't be any birds coming in today.

I am wearing out running between showers with washing on and off the line. Have managed to get most things dry there are only some bathmats left which were too wet to even bring onto the clothes horse inside...so they can stay out there and will be thoroughly rinsed.

The grass is lovely and green, but it just keeps growing! This is the dam next door the most water we have seen in it in 6 years.

Rain Rain go away

Please rain, go away. I know that sounds terrible, to people suffering drought conditions, but we do need a respite. I have been bemoaning the fact that it was so gloomy, when I remembered what I have read and seen of the snow in the Northern Hemisphere, and I guess we need to be grateful we dont have snow where I live.

Unfortunately every time it rains the grass grows AGAIN! and needs mowing

Decided to stay home instead of going to the shops...it would be too miserable so am playing with my computer and (after a bit of necessary housework) my embroidery.

Hope all those people with flooding are ok. We live on top of a hill so that is not an issue with us. DH has had to go out though so will look forward to his safe return later in the day.
