Cutie Pie

Who could resist this little face. This is our current baby.  He is so funny and is getting quite cheeky.  If his mother is eating something it is nothing for him to go up and eat it out of her mouth.  She never objects.  He is even running away which sets her off chasing him very quickly.

He has got to know that if  there is no food at the back patio where their water is there will be some at the front patio.

DH sits out there of an afternoon having a little scotch and talking to them and I think they  even understand him.  If they are near the gate to the house paddock and he beckons to them they come in to where he is to the food.

We would never have got them this close to the patio before and they even take a shortcut through it.  I was looking through the glass doors yesterday and next thing Joey was standing there on the patio looking at me.just outside the door....with a quizzical look of his face that said "who are you, you big blue thing" (I was in my wooly blue dressing gown)

Gorgeous visitor

Was watching TV this afternoon, and catching up on some of the things I have taped, when hubby called me to the front window and this is what was there. Isn't this little fellow too gorgeous. He is just the tiniest thing, although I think he may have been the last of the two babies to come out of the pouch. I think this is a different one to the baby in the garden. It would be nice to have them as pets, but they seem to have a lot of fleas and often see them scratching their tummies or their hindquarters. So they would not be good to cuddle.

He has the cutest little eyes when you see him up close. Their fur looks very soft. I couldn't get a photo of him hopping as he was too fast. It was amazing to see just how fast those little legs could carry him...Mum had a time of it keeping up.

Sad News
About 5 years ago there was one big buck wallaby who came in almost every day and he made quick work of our green grass....and because we did not have to cut the grass where he always came he was nicknamed "motormower". Well he almost became a fixture here, and then one day just disappeared. We thought at the time he may have been taken by wild dogs, and we really missed his visits.

Sadly a few days ago he arrived back...well we are sure it is him because he almost came to the back door....and seemed to know us. It is terrible to see him now...he is so old and thin and by the way he gets about looks as though he has been hit by something because he is limping on one of his legs. The fur round his mouth is snow white and we cant help thinking he has "come home to die".

I took a couple of photos of him for our own benefit, but cant put them up because they are too distressing. We thought of calling the wildlife people, but his visits are so random he would be hard to catch....so we just have to let nature take its course and he can come and finish his days with fresh water and lush green grass to eat. I nearly cry whenever he is here. He did not come today so maybe he has gone and just wanted to say goodbye.

Baby Wallaby is Out of the Pouch

I just couldn't resist putting up these pictures to share. We had a wonderful surprise this afternoon. Our internet server went out all over the country this morning and it has lasted all day. Missed having it so much. So was relaxing this afternoon watching a movie when DH called out to come quickly.

Ohhh it was lovely. Mum wallaby had let her baby out near our back door where we have water and feed for them. So here are the photos I took. The baby is just too cute. Would love to be able to cuddle it, but know mum would not allow that, and besides from
what we see of their scratching they could be full of fleas. But they are still
cute.
The photo at left is of mum with the babe in the pouch a couple of days ago. As you can see the pouch is hanging really low.

After seeing the baby out of the pouch it is hard to imagine how it fits into the pouch. We often saw the baby twist its head round and begin licking the mothers paws.

Here are Mum and baby sharing some water and food. Mum does keep a wary eye open though. There were a couple of magpies around them and mum kept a watch over baby at all times.

Then baby decided it wanted a drink from mum so stuck its head back into the pouch for a drink of milk....and then oops in it went back to bed.

The other day saw the baby out down in the paddock near the house, but too far away to take good pics. All of a sudden baby took off across the paddock, with mum hard at its heels. I reckon it got the rounds of the kitchen when mum caught up. It was just so funny to watch the little imp running away from mum.

Think we can now look forward to seeing more them now. Later tonight there were 3 mothers out there, with two out of the pouch, but it was too dark to get photos, so we have a real nursery happening at our place.
