Winter friends visiting

This is our little Bandicoot who has been coming in to visit at night. He is very skittish though, and it does not take long for him to run away when we turn the lights on. Dont know if he/she has a family stashed away somewhere, but there are a couple of hole dug into the soil up the back.



We have had a real collection of native animals lately. They seem to come more in winter, although we do have some loyal ones who come all year round. The wallabies have been very busy reproducing this year, probably because of all the rain we had earlier. we have two mothers with babies in the pouch at the moment, and they are so funny to watch.

One mother is tossing her baby out into the wide world...or I should say teaching him to fend for himself. It is so funny to watch her jump up and down and tip him out, and then take off with him hopping close at her heels. This is the baby who is "at foot". They must feel really safe with us to allow their babies the freedom near us. The mother probably has another baby suckling in the pouch. We have seen this one actually going up and putting its head in the pouch for a drink as well.



There can have up to 7 or so wallabies round the feed bowls of a night, and it is always obvious when there is a boss male wallaby round because all the females defer to him....hmmm the girls need some training dont they.

Yesterday we discovered that the rabbit pairs have been busy as well. These two little rascals have been scampering round in the front garden. They are only about 6 inches long at the moment. They live under the big rock in the front of the garden. We think there may be two families but they dont sit still for too long.


They are really cute. We do have a lot of hares as well, but they eat my plants. My roses have been denuded of leaves by them. I planted some petunias in one of the gardens but expect them to be a gourmet meal for one of the hares as soon as they discover them

We get a lot of pleasure out of watching the antics of our visitors.

Along with the birdsong, and having all the lovely little birds visit us, we are very fortunate not to have to put up with traffic noise.

These are our nearest neighbours, so it is very peaceful here.
